Information about Hue
Today a very important cultural centre in Vietnam, Hue was the capital of Vietnam since 1802 to 1945 during the renowned Nguyen Dynasty. This city is located in central Vietnam almost halfway in-between Hanoi (340 mi/545 km southeast) and Saigon (333 mi/510 km northeast). In Hue the best of Vietnam imperial architecture can be appreciated and although it was badly damage by wars and neglect, some of those royal buildings have been repaired and rebuilt, including the Forbidden Purple City, the emperor's private residence.
Hue is divided in half by the Song Huong and along its banks south of the City lie down various imposing tombs of the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. The mausoleums can be visited by bicycle or boat. We suggest you speak to the reception of your hotel to arrange a longboat. The boat will then take you from tomb to tomb and wait for you at the riverbank.
Make sure to stop at Tu Duc (an extensive site with lots of character), Minh Mang (a large and very well-preserved site), Khai Dinh (modest in scale but quite ostentatious) and the Thien Mu Pagoda (a beautiful, seven-tiered construction enclosed by gardens).
