Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vientam. Previously known as Saigon it was the Capital of the French colony of Cochinchina and later the Capital of South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. The name Saigon is still commonly used.
The city is located 60 kilometres from South Cina Sea and 1,760 kilometres from Hanoi. Its population is around 9 million inhabitants spread out in an area of 30, 000 square kilometers.
Its city center is garlanded with wide stylish boulevards and historic French colonial buildings. The most important structures in the city center are Reunification Palace, City Hall, Municipal Theatre, Ho Chi Minh City , City Post Office, State Bank Office, City People's Court and Notre-Dame Cathedral which resembles that of Paris. The city has various museums, such as the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Museum of Vietnamese History and concerning modern history the Revolutionary Museum and the War Remnants Museum (Ho Chi Minh City). The Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens dates from 1865.
